  8. Bad news! Unfortunately, because of  the  immense strain we are under
  9. here at Infinite  Frontiers,  we  have  been  forced  to  come to the
  10. conclusion  that  running  a  convention   is  currently  beyond  our
  11. capabilities.
  12.  
  13. We have had to deal with  a  number  of problems, both internally and
  14. externally,  that  made  the   prospect   of  running  Dominion  look
  15. increasingly unlikely, namely:
  16.  
  17. * The Committee
  18.  
  19.   Unfortunately, two members of the  committee  had dropped out since
  20.   the last update, one due  to  commitments  at University, the other
  21.   lacking confidence  to  do  his  job.  Also,  the  person  we  were
  22.   negotiating with to handle  our  video  programme  had declined the
  23.   opportunity to work with us, which left us with gaps in three vital
  24.   areas of the convention, with no-one available to replace them.

  26. * Workload
  27.  
  28.   We have been finding it increasingly difficult to produce The Final
  29.   Frontier on  a  regular  basis,  and  with  some  of  the  Infinite
  30.   Frontiers team  working  professionally,  our  time  is  even  more
  31.   precious. We are currently trying to restructure Infinite Frontiers
  32.   and to bring in  new,  talented,  dedicated  writers  to expand our
  33.   team. We think that once  we  have  a  team we are completely happy
  34.   with, then we can re-evaluate the possiblity of the group taking on
  35.   more work.

  37. * Fandom
  38.  
  39.   Star Trek fandom is currently  going  through  a number of changes.
  40.   Professional conventions are starting to take  place in the UK, fan
  41.   conventions are becomming more commonplace  (there are 19 scheduled
  42.   to run in 1995  alone!),  and  there  also  seems  to  be a growing
  43.   concern over politics  within  fandom.  There  are  too many people
  44.   involved in fandom at the moment who are trying to create havoc and
  45.   cause petty arguments and we  felt  that with the current situation
  46.   it was wise to step back and  let the dust settle before we started
  47.   anything major.

  49. * The Hotel
  50.  
  51.   Despite valiant efforts,  Kathy  Yates  was  getting  little  or no
  52.   response from the hotels that we were talking to in order to find a
  53.   venue for the convention. Some didn't  have the courteousy to reply
  54.   and others just weren't large enough  or didn't have the facilities
  55.   we needed.
  56.  
  57. * The Guests
  58.  
  59.   Tim Smith had been writing to  the  cast  members that we wanted to
  60.   invite over for Dominion, but  had  no response. Then we discovered
  61.   that a convention being held  this  year  in  the  UK, SOL III, had
  62.   already confirmed one of our target  guests as being their guest of
  63.   honour, namely Dwight Schultz. That  being  the case, we would have
  64.   had to find a new guest  to  invite.  We were also still awaiting a
  65.   reply from our other targetted guest, Terry Farrell!

  68. It was unfortunate that this  had  to  happen,  and it was a decision
  69. that wasn't taken lightly, but  we  hope  you  understand why we felt
  70. that we were left with no real choice.
  71.  
  72. However, Dominion isn't scrapped...  merely  postponed,  so keep your
  73. eyes open for details in the future.
